The Tower of the Winds

Greek Tower of the Winds is the oldest monument in the meteorological Athens. Official time of its erection is considered the first century BC. It was built by the famous ancient astronomer Andronicus. 

Tower of the Winds is an octagonal building height of 12 meters, diameter - 8 meters. The tower was given its name because of the allegorical images of the eight winds on its frieze zoster: northern Boreas, the north-eastern Kekiya, Apeliota eastern, southeastern Evra note southern, southwestern Lips, Zephyr western and northwestern Skirona. 

Greek Tower of the Winds performs several functions. She was also a sundial and water clock and weather vane. The uniqueness of the mechanism of its facilities serve as an example for the construction of the Oxford Observatory. In addition, the tower with the same name is located in Ukraine, in the city of Sevastopol. 

Tower of the Winds is located in the most ancient part of Athens in the Plaka at Agora. It can be reached by subway, coming on Monastiraki station. You can also call a taxi and go to the entrance to the Acropolis, and from there by Hadrian's Library you get to the tower.
